What is the NATO Phonetic Alphabet used for?

Project #1

Create an interactive program that converts a user input string into the NATO Phonetic alphabet.

For example:

1. ask the user to input a string
2. convert each character into it's NATO Phonetic alphabet equivalent
3. display the results
4. loop

What do you do with characters not in the NATO Phonetic alphabet? What does NATO do?
